Description
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is hosting a virtual workshop titled "Disparities Across the Spectrum of Pulmonary Vascular Disease (PVD)" on October 22-23, 2024. This two-day event will explore the intersection of race, ethnicity, sex, gender, and social determinants of health in relation to pulmonary vascular diseases. Topics will include disparities in disease incidence, treatment outcomes, and access to care, with an emphasis on underrepresented populations and the impact of structural racism. Key discussions will also focus on biological mechanisms, intersectionality, and innovative strategies to address these gaps in real-time.
This workshop is open to clinicians, researchers, public health professionals, and anyone with an interest in reducing health disparities in pulmonary vascular disease. The event will feature distinguished speakers from academia, government, and clinical practice, who will share insights from the latest research, including findings from large cohort studies like the NHLBI Pulmonary Vascular Disease Phenomics (PVDomics) cohort and the Jackson Heart Study.
Key Objectives
- Highlight the impact of social determinants of health and structural racism on PVD outcomes and treatment disparities.
- Discuss the role of intersectionality in understanding and addressing PVD in underrepresented populations.
- Explore the influence of sex and gender on the incidence and progression of pulmonary vascular diseases.
- Identify knowledge gaps and propose strategies to standardize data collection related to race, ethnicity, sex, and social determinants in PVD research.
- Propose targeted interventions and methods for operationalizing equitable care in real-time clinical settings.
Key Questions
- How do race, ethnicity, and social determinants of health influence the incidence and severity of PVD?
- What role do sex and gender differences play in PVD pathophysiology and treatment outcomes?
- How can omics markers associated with race and ethnicity be integrated into personalized PVD care strategies?
- What are the key barriers preventing equitable access to care and clinical research participation for underrepresented groups in PVD?
- How can innovative interventions be designed to mitigate disparities in PVD across diverse patient populations?
